I fail to see the correlation between "air yards" and speed. Fast guys can definitely be useful running deep down the field, but for most deep tosses it comes down to athletic timing, body control, hands, leaping ability and size (this explains why Brandon Lloyd has so many "air yards") more than speed. Some of the really fast guys catch a lot of short passes (drags, crosses, screens, slants) so they are an easier target for the QB and can still use their speed to get separation. These guys don't get the "air yards" of a guy running a 9 or a post, but they may be just as fast or faster.

Ultimately there is no way to determine speed from football stats, but I think YPC is probably a better measure than "air yards."
