I ran accross this question today online, about having nicotine on your hands when you bait your hook, that some fish hate the smell of it, or can smell it, and it effects how well you catch fish. So i was just wondering if anyone here knows if this is true or not. I used to work in greenhouses, and in interior foliage greenhouses for about 10 years, and i do know that nicotine is a natural pesticide. It is highly toxic, and we would use nicotine bombs to kill insects in foliage greenhouses, after everyone had gone home. I know you can make your own home brew of nicotine pesticide to kill ants, simply by soaking butts in a jar of water left in the sun for a few days. So for those of us who smoke, do you think having it on your fingers and hands might also effect the fishing you do? ???

I take a wet dishtowel to wipe my hands on when i bait my hooks and after im done baiting it, because i have wondered also about the smell of handi-wipes on the bait.

Back in Michigan, we fished a small stream. One day after running out of bait, I think we were using hot-dogs, my buddy used his cigerette butt. (We were young   :-\ ). We used to catch chub? and every once in a great while, we'd  catch a rainbow. Anyway, he caught a pumpkinseed? on the cigerette butt. After that, we all had to try it. I think we got 3 that way. So if you're ever in MI, and fishing for 3" pumpkin seeds. I don't think it matters. I always rince my hands in lakes here to try to get rid of any scents on my hands (unless it's freezing cold).               Oh, and koni, about you 're taste in music... You're an oddball               ;)    just kidding!

Good Question....

I smoke and don't notice any problems. When they bite, they bite. When they won't.... Well.... Smoke another cigarette to kill time.

I was fishing today and caught 8 rainbows, I am a non-smoker and my buddy was with me, he was dipping and caught 1 rainbow at 3:30pm and we fished from 8am.
You be the judge I guess.

Last week at Barbour ponds I caught probably over 15 trout. My girlfriend caught 6. My buddy caught 4.

My buddy quit smoking about 2 months ago.

My girlfriend smokes just as much as me.

I smoke a lot especially when I fish..

I don't know if it matters. It'll probably impact spooked fish.

I've been skunked before and was mad at myself for not bringing cigarettes to pass time.

However.....

I don't like to put on lotion before I go fishing. It's my personal belief. Almost like a superstition. And if I put on sunscreen, I like to wash my hands thoroughly before making my move to touch my equipment.

Smoking and archery elk hunting is a whole different story though, but that's a different forum topic. During the season is when I suffer.. How ironic? Suffer while avoiding what's killing my young self? It just does not make sense.. Oops.. Sorry guys, I'm thinking out loud onto this post.

I have one from when I was a kid and it was the first time I was "allowed" to join the grown ups on an ice fishing trip to Faribault...some lakes that were about 45 minutes from our house that contained really good crappie...it was an ice fishing trip on top of it and it was my first one too...I was 10 years old...my dad smoked like a steam engine and so did his friend Vince...so we had our 3 holes drilled in the same area...my dad and Vince were meat fisherman as adults were in those day...the limit on crappies was 15 per person...well much to their chagrin I caught my 15 in short order without them getting a bite!...the jokes started to come about stuffing the skinny kid down the ice hole...well after I got my limit I started to joke back that I could catch their limit too...but their better idea was to switch holes...well I started to catch fish out of their holes and they still didnt have a bite and they started to chain smoke worse...which brought up me kidding them about the fish didnt like the "smoke" on their hands because they are racking their brains on what I am doing different...well in those days there wasnt much difference in ice tackle...small bobber and a teardrop...we were all at the same depth...with the afore mentioned rig with a crappie minnow...the final tally for the day...I caught 44 crappies...Vince caught one...he let me cut and retie his hook and bait it...I ended up doing that to them all the time...was it smokers?...I dunno but it sure lent a case...

I do know that if you throw crappies on the ice and smoke around them they die!...so the affects of second hand smoke on crappies on the ice appears to be quite severe...even though the Surgeon General doesnt mention it in any of his disclaimers...

And nope I dont smoke...

OneEye...I dont like lotion either...I even use the latex gloves to put it on...and I am a step worse...I like to take a shower in the morning before I fish...even if I leave for Spinney at 3am...I get up 15 minutes early so I can get a shower...I like the hands as clean as possible...that would be a good thread...fishing superstitions...I dont own a gas auger for the same reason...

I could go on and on about how bad smoking is for your health (I used to smoke) but I won't. :'( A dog's sense of smell is far more acute then a human and a fish's sense of smell depends on the species but is generally far more acute than a dog's. So you be the judge. We can all give anecdotal info about how scent matters or doesn't . If you say you smoke when you fish and you still catch fish my answer is you would catch even more if you didn't smoke. Ed

Im kinda neurotic about keeping my hands clean when I'm fishing. It wouldn't be the smoke that affects the fishing, but the nicotine transmitted from your hands and fingers to the bait, if it affects the fishing at all.

Haha I make my girlfriend pump gas on days I'm going fishing, so she usually makes me get gas the day before if she remembers.

Me and my buddy up above were fishing with the same bait in practically the same spot since I was catching them and he wasnt I told him to fish in "my hole" thinking he would catch one. But for some reason he wasnt getting any I really think its was from the chew he was dippin. However my uncle use to spit kodak on his lures and worms when he use to fish with him and he would catch fish. The world may never know.
