I've done that before, was using a humpy. Difficult to keep track of the fly but was exciting to hook a fish when you barely hear a rise.

Maybe try a Rebel red-eyed minnow with the small diamonds pattern on each side or the Rebel "tracdown" in brown trout pattern (both at Walmart). I'd try fishing both as a jerk bait; short stabs of one or two at a time during retrieve.
