I'm fishing this weekend at Lake Hawkins in East Texas, Pickerel on the Fly. I don't know much about these toothy critters other than they are a smaller version of the Northern Pike. Anyone have a pattern or 2 that might work for these guys?

They've got pickerel down there?

You're right that they are pretty much little pike. They like reeds and other vegetation for cover, particularly if it's in the shadow of a bankside tree on a sunny day. I think they are considered ambush predators, but in my limited experience they seem to cruise their territory more than some others. Never fished for them on the fly, only hardware, but any streamer, leech, bugger or crayfish imitation could do the trick.

Bust 'em up Dean!

Don't forget John Barr's Slumpbuster and Meat Whistle - love that whistle on a jig hook!

Might also try a Hairy Fodder in red and white. Or chartreuse. Click here for instructions: http://flyartstudio.com/wordpress/?p=129

Happy fishing, Dean. I want to see your pictures! ;)
