Well guys, I went to Prewitt this morning to try to catch me that ten pound catfish that has been haunting me in my dreams.  No Luck.  My dad and I arrived around 6:00 a.m. and left at 2:00 p.m.  First three hours, nada.  Not one bite.  I was using liver, shrimp, and crayfish on one pole and worms on the other.  Decided to try using a rattlin rap and as I was reeling in on about my fourth cast, I hear my bell ring and my dad say whoa!!! I turn my head and see my rod go flying down the dam and into the water.  I thought that it was a huge catfish.  Tried to use snagging hooks to find my rod but lost the only two I had.  I thought for sure that I just lost my new rod and ambassador reel.  70 bucks down the drain.  About ten minutes later my dad points out a fish swimming in circles about 60 feet out and see that it is a wiper.  Figured it was still hooked to my pole so threw out my other line and retrieved it with the fish still hooked.  Nice 20 incher who is cooking in the oven right now.  That should show him.  Then about an hour later I was using the x-rap that is shown and caught another about 16 inches.  It nailed that thing.  That was it for me.  My dad lost one that looked pretty decent and missed two nice bites.  Overall it was a good trip.  I am just glad to have got my fishing pole back!

One more thing..... No red tint in the water is there? You know..... That weird algae bloom that the lake usually has.. Your honest answer will be appreciated.

:D :D I aint hatin, brotha. I've got, well.... I DID have the same $9.99 Walmart specials, but I lost them jumping after a pole at Union. Same scenario as yours except I came back drenched LOL! But yeah. My pimp $9.99 shades are somewhere in like almost 4 foot of water on the west side of Union now. Your picture makes me miss my ol' shades.

My glasses actually say panama jack.

catfishking; I have only fished on the dam the last ten years or so fishing Prewitt. I have fished once actually on the shore by the campground but didn't even get a bite. I don't think that the lake is very deep anywhere, it seems to be mostly flat ground. I have caught the catfish everywhere along the dam by the north parking lot all on worms. They all average about three pounds. Everytime I have tried to catch them with other bait such as doughballs, or liver, I get skunked. The lake is pretty full still with the water up the dam but the inlet is now dry so the lake should be going down as the farmers use up the water. If you walk up the path by the north parking lot, right by the emergency rope is a good place to fish for the cats. I've seen about a dozen catfish heads on the ground a few years back when the water was low. That area is full of rocks so they must like to hang around there. Just expect many snags. I've caught lots of walleye/saugeye in this area too but no wiper. Hope this helps. I think slayerfish knows about catfishing at prewitt, you might want to ask him.

HEeehhe.. Thats funny that same thing happened to me at LONETREE.. Very nice people on a little boat helped me out with my rod and fish. Mines wasnt that big of a fish but a keeper. Im glad that Prewitt is doing a lot better than it was.. I thought forsure all the fish in there died of something .. or because of the drought. Thanks for the report man..

I think that there is still a healthy population of fish in ther but just not like it used to be. I used to only be able to keep one rod in the water at a time and sometimes would have two fish on my crappie rig. Hopefully with the stocking of 50,000 wiper and 50,000 saugeye this year, it will become what it was in a few years.

Way kewl story with a good ending...the moral here is when fishing for wipers and there are chances for good sized fish...leave the drag on your pole as light as possible...they arent nibblers for the most part...they hit on the move and usually have a head of steam...if your drag is tight and you are more than 10 feet away you probably wont get it in time...man I love those fish...it makes me wonder what a big 100 pound ocean Striper is like...I thought I read they get to like a 150 pounds...but a way kewl story...glad you got your pole back...still catching up on all the posts I am behind from being gone...this is one busy place!!!...hard to believe what it used to be like before they changed the format...

I actually did have my drag set pretty loose. I heard the zzzzzzzz right before I could grab the pole.

Have to be careful and set the drag light. I have lost many a poles in Nebraska on the platte from them dang ole catfish. Then again falling asleep with the pole in your hand is not a good thing. Wake up just in time to see your pole disappear into the dark and the splash of the reel hitting the water. This has happened more then once to me, my uncles and aunts taking me fishing at night. When you are young and the fish arent biting its hard to stay awake.
