This is all just hearsay but it's news. My dad said he had seen an article in the newspaper a few weeks back that there was another fish kill at Prewitt. However the DOW report says that a few wiper and cats are being caught. But today I just heard from my friend that his co-worker has went out there the last two weekends and been knocking the wiper dead. I am definetily going this weekend and will keep you all updated. Remember, this is not from my personal experience so don't hate me if you go and have no luck ;) Saturday night I will try for the cats and on sunday the wipeys!!!

I'm quite sure the wipers still exist with a good enough population at Prewitt.

The past fish kills were caused by what the DOW called a "Golden Algae". They believe it was brought in by birds... Didn't kill all the fish, but most.

Hey T-fin,

My bf (gotmusky?) told me that the DOW said that the fish kill from like two years ago was from someone's boat that wasn't washed off after using it in Texas.

Slayerfish,
I don't think he said if it was from shore or boat, but I'm sure my bf will find out and be able to let you know either tonight when he get's back from work or tomorrow after he gets to ask his buddy.

I think he was fishing from the shore. The lake is full and I have always had great success fishing off the dam when it is full. The windier the better. Wiper, walleye, cats, perch, and carp. I can't wait til this weekend.

Is it really true that if you fish on the damn you have to tie yourself to the car a walk down to fish? I have always wanted to fish at prewitt but that sounds to extreme for me. That sounds like it could be an event on espn's x games lol.

No. It is a good idea to have a rope though to put your stringer on. You can fish off the top of the dam on the road. You can not park or even drive on the road though unless you are the ranger. You just have to be careful when walking down the side of the dam because it can get pretty slick when wet. Most people just pull their fish up the side of the concrete damn but I think it's hard on the fish, especially if you are going to release them and a lot of them will fall off your line if you try this. I just try to get as far down as I can when landing a fish and scoop them with a net.

Stafford the DOW Biologist from there got a flesh eating bacteria from a prewitt catfish that poked him. He had to retire cuz it's messin with his arm functions.

Having grown up in Sterling, we have had many keggers at the prewitt and even rolled a vehicle there. Watch out for the kids! LOL

I talked to several biologists and water quality specialists from the CDOW and Logan County and they all told me that it was brought in by waterfowl.

Went to Prewitt Sunday morning and fished from 6 to about 2. Windy and cold as heck but that's the way I like it at Prewitt. Well at least the wind. Anyways here's the scoop. Fished with my father and girlfriend and caught 3 carp (two fell off on the dam), two wiper 16 inchers, and one catfish around two lbs all on worms between the three of us. Used crawfish and shrimp but no bites. I guess I was wrong about the wiper hitting like crazy there. Lost another that I think was a wiper too. Man, when those fish hit they HIT! Thought I was going to lose my pole everytime! I had fun but overall was not worth the drive this time. DOW ranger told another fisherman I talked to there that they are not going to let Prewitt go to the dumps after all. They are going to stock it this summer with 50,000 saugeye and 50,000 wiper. Lets just hope there are no more fish kills to take em out again. Hey iceintheveins, I think you are right about the fowl bringing in that crap, sounds more realistic.

Here's what my girlfriend and I caught at Prewitt using circle hooks and worms. 1Eyered, I'm not discouraged, just very impatiently waiting for the bite to start.

Wiper_Stalker,

Yeah, fished off of the dam right where the fence ends.  Used worms on circle hooks and fished off of the bottom with the weight about 18inches above the hook. Parked in the north parking lot and walked for about two minutes.
