Didn't even know if I should post a repoprt cause there ain't much to talk about. Caught two spots right away-they were the last fish I caught. One on a jerk, one on a tube. Then the wind came up too much to fish any jigs/soft plastics so I switched to a crank-a few bites but no hookups-they were just slapping at it. A frustrating day on the whole. Only saw a couple of boats all morning so that was nice. Water temp was 52-53-actually down about 4 degrees from last week. A day like today will humble ya. Ed :(

Pueblo has humbled me this year. Two whole hits so far with nothing to the boat. Only good thing is that everyone else I talked to wasn't doing any better.

I was so desperate on Sunday I snagged a big old carp with a crank bait. Couldn't get her the boat either :-\

It may be me but are there more carp at Pueblo then there used to be? I sure don't recall seeing them in these numbers. Made me want to break out the archery gear.

If you want carp, 11 Mile is the lake I'd recommend. There are large pods of those fish in June all around the lake but especially just east of Corral Cove. I caught one last year on a jerk and this year I even have the Uncle Josh carp bait-gonna target these submarines.

WMCree-Don't feel bad, I been fishing Pueblo since it opened-I think that was '78 or '79. Its a tough lake. What are you throwing at the fish? What species are you fishing for? Ed

Do you guys just release those things back into the lake?

not trying to start a catfight here...but I DO know a couple of fishermen who make a practice of snipping their (CARP) gills in order to help keep them from taking over.

I am NOT condining, or suggesting this activity...just curious what your thougths are.

I figure, in the case of 11 Mile, that the pike do a pretty good job of keeping the carp numbers in check. Snipping their gills (and then releasing them?) sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me. The thing is, if a body of water becomes overun with carp, I don't think a bunch of fishermen killing what they catch will make even a minor dent in the population. These are IMHO, great fun to catch-I've caught a bunch at Sanchez in late spring. I say, enjoy them for the sport they can provide. Ed

Ed I was targeting spots and smallies. I hit everywhere with the exception of the large rock wall that is near the beginning of the trees. I tried spinners mainly chartrues, senkos, cranks, curly tail gubs, carolina rigging just about everything. The only thing I didn't try was explosives and nodda :-[. I did get one solid hit on a black/blue senko in a cove but fishing was so slow for me that the reaction time wasn't what it should have been. Once down in the trees I marked tons of fish but am guessing that most were carp.

Wmccree here is another technique you might want to try while the water temps are still down. Rig them weight less and fish extremely slow. Also deadstick a jerkbait, basically jerk, jerk pause for like 30 seconds or so then jerk, jerk, pause and so on.
However I agree Pueblo is a hard lake to fish, when I lived in Pueblo about 6 yrs ago I tried the lake and got skunked everytime. However that was when I was in one of my non-outdoor slumps and just basically worked, bar hopped, and online gaming, ocassionally fell asleep once in a while.
Also if you are targetting smallies you have to work those rock walls mang.

WMCree-This lake can humble you but here goes. This time of year, if you're fishing for smallies and spots, forget the upper end, fish the lower end from North Marina down to the dam. Fish tubes, jerks and your senkos on main lake points, especially areas with rock rubble. Forget cranks and spinners, its too early. Fish shallow, but near deep water. Fish the dam. I think the best all around bait on this lake is a tube-1/8 oz insert if its calm, 3/16 or 1/4 if its windy. You drag this on the bottom from the bank out to 15-20 ft. your gonna gets bites. I guarantee it!! ::) Ed

I got a Lowe-dark blue with a white Johnson on it. If I go I might have the pooch with me-he's a yellow lab and likes to ride right up in the bow. Ed

I agree with you on the MURDER thing with the Carp, Ed.

I have had a blast, and so has my son, in catching these things, on spinning gear, AND fly gear!

I just wondered what your thoughts were. I don't think we can get rid of them that way either...and besides, they probably provide a service to the water or the lake soem how and balnce out the eco system? I don't really know much about biology..but I know I am not supposed to disturb it!

GOOD LUCK OUT THERE!

I do release all the carp I catch. I probably fish, on avg, 5 to 8 days a month and probably keep less than 10 fish all year. And that includes shore lunches.

Cutting the gills and letting it go! That's absurd. Besides doing absolutly nothing for lowering the numbers of a species it's cruel. If they feel the need at least kill it humanely.
