I went to Quincy alone this morning. I got there at 4:50, so I waited in the shool parking lot. By the time the ranger got there to opn the gate, there were four people in line. I started on the dam with a big Kastmaster. I caught one trout right away. There was a dude next to me throwing rocks at the diving ducks saying, "they're nothin' but fish eatin' sons o' b*****s." That was interesting. Was that any of you guys? I switched to a smaller Kastmaster and caught a pretty nice trout. The action slowed down, so I moved to the dock and switched to bass mode. I got one solid hit on a crank, but nothing else. I switched to a spinnerbait and had one follow it in, but nothing else. I switched to a Texas-rigged pumpkin Senko with a bullet weight. I was slowly dragging it across the bottom and kept getting littoe vibrating hits, but nothing big enough to set the hook into. Maybe they were baby bass, trout, or perch? I don't know. I switched from this to a rainbow pattern Rapala and still had no luck. Then I used some Gulp 3" crawdads in camo color. Nothing was interested. I left around 7:00.

Summary:

-Don't throw rocks at birds.

-Fish from about 5 to 6, and don't come back until the same time P.M.

-Use Kastmasters.

Don't think the diving ducks have much of a impact on fish populations. Though Rangers have told me Pelicans are a real problem. On the Miracle mile I've seen them catch 3-4 lb trout, also I've seen guys with pellet guns shooting the Pelicans out there.
Thats BS!!! Anyone doing that should be shot them selfs. Birds can't go to the store and buy fish like we can so of course their going to get it any way they can. Im really sick of people these days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-JAY!!!!!
Makes you wonder what did that guy expect. HELLO-Birds eat fish!!
Reminds me of a scene in Finding Nemo when the pelican says to nemo "sorry if I ever took a swipe at you, kid. Fish gotta swim, Birds gotta eat".
Dude throwing rocks at birds..... Interesting. It was me J/K..

It's kinda funny how miss-informed that guy is. Diving ducks eat crustaceans and the only fish they eat are only the ones small enough to fit their mouths which is only bait-potential fish. As for pelicans, well.... I don't mind seeing them scoop up fish here and there. I find it kinda interesting, if ya ask me. Especially if I aint catching anything, I sure as heck don't mind seeing these big white funny looking birds scoop up a big fish.

Glad you got into some fish. Good report, bud.
Im willing to bet they're not even ducks and that they were Cormeranos (Spelling). They do dive and catch fish. Not that it matters what it is. No one should throw anything at any animal. We are in their house and should respect them!

Im going to go hug a tree now!!!

LOL!! It's alright, bro. You do that. It's good to know that we've still got folks that give a darn.
The birds out at Quincy (cormerons) spelling?? eat fish way bigger than baitfish. I have seen them dive and eat trout and bass right next to my belly boat. You would be surprised at the size of fish they are able to swallow.
I saw a family of Bald Eagles early in the year at CherryCreek and one was diving down and catching fish. Why is this bird any diffrent than a Cormeran or Haron or even a crow. They all need to eat like the rest of us!!!

I do give a dam!!!

Actually, I have seen those black diving duck things come up with some very nice trout. Then they manuever them and sorta toss them up into their mouths. Their neck gts all big and down goes the fish. It's crazy.
Yep, Those are cormoran's. The ones we have here are alittle diffrent than this pic but you get the idea.

They're not ducks... they're called cormorants. Primarily sea-going, this species, the double-creasted cormorant, is also found far inland through-out the U.S. and parts of Canada. They literally "fly" underwater catching fish and crustaceans.

In Asia, fisherman will teather the birds and tie a piece of rope firmly, but not too tight, around their necks and let them swim through schools of fish. After a few moments, they'll pull the birds back into the boat and force the bird to regurgitate it's catch which it could not swallow completely because of the rope around it's neck.

Btw... I already checked at Sportsman'a and Gander Mountain... they're fresh out of cormorants!
Cormoran's can damage a fishery. A few years ago several men that owned a fishing lodge on a remote Canadian lake were charged with killing several hundred. At that time the bird was on the endangered list. They still may be unfortunately. The birds were eating all the walleye in the lake and making it very difficult for these guys to make a living. I do not think we should run around killing everything but peta mentality is certianly not the answer either. Many animals became extinct long before you could blame man.
Fished Quincy today for my second time in search of the Tiger Muskie.  Used my rainbow colored flat-fish that is around six inches and caught two bucket mouths.  Well almost two, one spit out my lure when it went airborn.  This one was 15 inches and the other looked to be around the same size. <IMG SRC=http://ba.bebo.com/ba/large/2005061703/6855909a10133127b592106066l.jpg>
nice bass gotmusky!

As for the dude throwin' rocks, he doesn't realize he's probably killed more fish there this year than the bird. Plus the bird is dependent on that food source and he isn't. Maybe he should be throwing rocks at himself!

Yeah, commorants can eat big fish!! Hehe... When they 1st mentioned fish eating ducks I was thinking more on the lines of goldeneyes, redheads, buffleheads, bluebills etc... (sigh).. Kinda makes me miss the waterfowl season, but that's a different forum. :)

Much as I enjoy catching fish, that is only a small part of the experience. For me, equally great at least is getting to see such things as beaver, osprey, cormorants, pelicans, etc., doing their thing. What is more amazing than a flotilla of pelicans sailing together through the air, or the disappearing cormorant who finally comes up half a football field away from where it dived under with a big fish in its beak; or seeing an osprey turn a fish around in its claws so that it faces front and is more aerodynamic to carry . . . Rocks at birds? Pellet guns? Heck, if you hate nature, why not just buy fish at the store and tie them on to a string and pull them around your living room? Just my toosense worth.
