No trip to the San Luis is complete without attempting to catch a Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout. My personal favorite Rio Grande Trout water is Medano Creek in the Sand Dunes Park. A few other creeks in the park and surrounding areas also hold the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout. They give out maps in the visitors center. The Blanca Wetlands have several lakes with both warm and cold water fish. I have never fished Sanchez or Smith Res., but several San Luis locals have told me they can be productive.

head up the Conejos. Fox Creek Store is very helpful. There is a big lake way up the river- big browns- hard to catch. Another lake up on the pass with good numbers of big brookies and cuts. Rough road. I busted 3 tires on the last trip. There is an old guy that lives by the lodge in the summer. He's got a tire machine and you have to fix the tires yourself- best $12 (EACH) I ever paid.
