I had the chance to fish Lake McConaughy with HooknLine and his friends on Saturday evening through Sunday morning, for Wipers and Channel Cats and it turned out to be a REEL-SCREAMING event!

We setup on the beach just west of Spillway Bay, at about 6:30 p.m., and rigged with ½ - 1-oz. slip sinkers and a single hook on each rod, which we baited with crawdad tails.  We casted as far as possible, and fished a depth of approx. five feet of water.  The first few casts instantly yielded several catfish ranging from 1-3 lbs. HooknLine related that if the winds subsided (15-21 mph) the baitfish would come in close to shore and he?d throw cast nets to collect baitfish to target the larger wipers.  The breeze remained fairly consistent and didn?t really settle a bit until around two a.m. when the wiper fishing really picked up. The baitfish never made it close to shore, so we continued to bait up with crawdads, not that it mattered, as the wipers hammered the dads over and over again.

We had several line breaks, and at three occasions were unattended rods were pulled from their holders and yanked into the lake before their handlers sprinted into the lake pell-mell in order to catch them before loosing them forever.  The quiet of the night was filled with the sound of screaming reels as the hooked wipers and catfish made their runs for freedom. When it was all said and done, we landed at least 30 channel catfish 1-3 lbs, and 30 wipers 2-6 lbs (we all lost count).   And as an added bonus, and at the beach, HooknLine and his buds, cooked up some of the best wiper fillets and fish sauce, on top of rice, that I?ve ever had; what an outstanding night! I don?t have the time to post photos this morning but will add them tonight. HooknLine related that the wiper bite will remain this way through the remainder of summer, but he key to catching the wipers is knowing where to fish for them, and how. WAY TO GO HOOKNLINE!!!

Photos will follow later tonight when I have a little more time to post them.

LOL Pete's friend was funny as hell. I met Pete through his friend Eric. Eric comes into our store each weekend cause he gets his hair cut at a barber right by here.

Mconaughty only allows one person to keep one wiper over 18', so basically your only going to keep one wiper cause they are all over 18'. Eric starts catching some 5-6 lbers and he doesnt want to put them back haha it was funny Pete had to talk him into releasing all the wipers witch he did. But it took alot of sweet talking.

Oh by the way it wasnt wiper filets it was catfish that we fileted

We also caught 5 whitebass and 1 carp that PETE fileted and ate by himself J/K

Good one HooknLine,

Yeah, you'll see Eric's wild eyed look tonight when I post his pic, but he did the right thing by putting the fish back, and he got to take home plenty of catfish to make up for the pigs he had to release.

Pete

PS. Also got a chance to meet with Qucikrelease who pulled up in his boat and fished with us for about an hour before pulling heading out to meet with his camping party. Any luck during the day at Big Mac Quickrelease?

Can you fish it and get the same results from shore? Just wondering cause the boat is in the shop. Some guy backed into it at a gas station.

fishingguitars it was funny cause before we left PETE asked me "you sure we dont need a boat."He offered to take his boat, I told him no. When we started catching he said "boat for sale" LOL. From denver 3-3 and half depends on how u drive. I dont speed to many tickets in the past so i get there in 3 and a half.

A friend and I were considering a trip to Big MAc on Thursday nite. Can you give me the low down on where to go and all the juicy details? We would love to post a report like yours after our trip also.

You can fish anywhere on the lake just fish from shore and bring live crawdads not the ones you buy either go catch them some where. Just fish at Martin Bay Bay 1 thats a easy place to get to. Fish right where the rocks from the dam and the sand beach met each other. Other really good areas are bay 5 and bay 6 if u go to those bays u have a wade out and cast. If you not going to bring crawdads your better off not going imo.

Actually if u want to catch alot of cats your better off at 5 or 6 cause Martin Bay is full of wipers. Quick release told us he saw a lot of dead cat fish from shore and on another site i read some other guy saw the thing. Here http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=007449 this is bay 5 so u might want to try there. Just make sure you have 4 wheel drive and be very careful i got stuck twice already. Hope this helps, theres fish all over the lake not difficult at all.

how far out do we need to throw from martin bay. We wouldn't mind wipers either. And is the bite later and still on craw tails. We may try the other bay, but we wouldn't want to get stuck. For our first trip, we won't get there until almost dark and would want it pretty easy. We can work up from there. So whatever you would suggest. Fairly simple access, and rigging info would be great!

Thanks again

I got the skunk. Tried trolling everything Sunday morning and didn't even get a hit. Should have stuck it out with you. The ride back to the North shore was pretty hairy in the dark.
