The other day when I went to Jefferson Lake, my fishfinder was scrolling, but blank. It didn't show any depth at all.... ?.... Even at depths where I know it's about 10 ft down cause I could see the bottom, it didn't read. I checked the (transducer?) and made sure it was sitting correctly and it was. I recall when I went to Union the few days before, I kinda banged the transducer up a little trying to get the boat onto the trailor.

Could it be broken? What are usual troubleshooting steps? I know I can just read the manual, but I don't have it with me right now and was just curious if any of y'all can give some input.

Thanks,

IeyeRed-I had one go bad like this-it was the transducer. Check where it connects into the unit (I'm sure you have) and make sure its a solid connection. You can buy a new transducer but these cost almost what a new unit will cost so just maybe this is your excuse to get a BETTER one. ::) Ed

Hehe..... I've pondered that too. I would have to sneak that one in without The Woman knowing ;)

Buy the newest and most improved sonar, use the other one as an excuse to "upgrade". Then look for loose wires and stuff after you get the new one. Keep the old one for emergencies then! ;)

1Eye,

Sounds like the tranducer, but most units have a reset function for settings. I was having proplems marking fish and I had to reset it. It was a new unit and I believe I was playing around with it like it was a GameBoy unit. Had other fishermen looking over there shoulders at all that noise I was making. \

Most units if you push the menue tab twice it takes you to some extra setting selections that you can edit. If you have GPS points stored it will not delete them it will just take you back to the orginal settings from the factory.

Good pointer, Campingkids.. But um, my lil fish finder has anything, but GPS :D
Shoo, that lil p.o.s. doesn't even have temperature readings!! But thanks anyway, I'm going to try pushing the menue tab twice to see if that takes me to that extra setting. More than likely, I'm gonna do what most of y'all suggested.... Buy a new one. And I'm thinking of this one.. Check this out and tell me whatchu think:

1eyered,

I would spend a few more bucks for higher resolution vertically. I have the Fishmark 320 softpack for ice fishing and liked it so well I put a fishmark 480 on my old boat. I have had a Bottomline 480 max, Humminbird 67, Garmin 240, Lowrance 332, and the Eagles over the last few years. The Eagles are very good and I would rate them above everything execpt the color Lowrance.

Thanks, Terre..

The only reason I plan on such a cheapo is because well.. The boat's a 12 ft cheapo too and I know that most of my fishing is shore fishing anyways. Gotta match the package. I just need something that'll give me depth, an idea of whether or not fish are in the area and temp readings. Most importantly, it's all I can afford (sigh). As for speed of troll and stuff, I go soley by instinct. Yeah, I guess I'm old fashioned, but it's always somehow worked for me.

When I get an 'official' fishing boat though, I'm definitely picking something of quality. Thanks for your suggestions. I'll definitely keep those names in mind for my future 18 ft LUND.

Thanks, Dan.

I'm thinking on getting that too, but I also like the Eagle. It's mostly based on my wallet, of course, but all I really need is depth, structure, temp and I'll do the rest of the math.
