hi folks. when we were deciding if we'd even like fishing I got a basic Ugly Stick (6'8" or whatever it is) with 6lb mono. for bobber/fly fishing it's great. frequently I'm in at least slightly windy places and using 1/8-1/4oz kastmasters or other spinners/crank bait. I just can't get them out there. the 1/4 oz are a little better, but not much. I fish from shore only because I get horribly motion sick.

Recently I got a UL Daiwa Revros combo for perch and crappie and have 5lb (maybe 4 I don't remember) vanish on it. the thing is just so pleasant to use. I can hurl a 1/8 or 1/4 oz lure out forever and it is smooth coming back. it's the only rod I can get a rapala to go more than 15 feet with.

if you'll forgive my very beginner knowledge, can you help me with your suggestion of the best ML or M rod, reel and line combo so I can get my 1/4 oz lures and rapalas out there further? There is a medium and a med light version of the same combo, would that get me out there further with a little heavier setup?

not looking to break the bank here, probably under $100 for the combo.
thanks for your suggestions.

Did you replace the line that came with the combo?

I'd start there. Most of the time the line that comes pre-spooled is garbage.

You shouldn't have any problem with distance if you're throwing a 1/4oz Kasty.

Have you tried a float tube? I wouldn't imagine you getting sick in one of those.

Or get some waders and you'll open up a lot more opportunities to fish areas you couldn't previously reach.

the ugly stick didn't come pre-loaded. but the guy at cabelas did wind some basic berkley mono on it. don't recall what, do recall it wasn't fancy or expensive. I'd love a suggestion on what to try, I'm happy to start there.

Waders are on the list for santa, I may have to ask him to fed ex them sooner. have not tried a float tube. I love the idea of a kayak, peacful, good exercise, simple. last two times I went it was bad news. I am among the worst I've encountered for motion sickness, I hate it and I've bought about everything you can buy. several things work but they work by virtue of knocking me out cold and none are compatible with a beer.

Before buying a new setup I'd try some different line.

Thinner diameter line means less friction and weight, thus increased castability.

When I switched to braid with a leader on most of my spinning setups it noticeably increased casting distance. There are downsides to braid and air knots are a PITA.

Do some research, try out some different line and get a practice plug.

With the practice plug you can mess around with different casting techniques to find how to get more distance.

alrighty, thanks for the input. got re-loaded with floro line and going to try the 1/4 kastys and a rapala with a 1/8 bullet sinker just as soon as I can get time to get to the water somewhere.

Get a practice plug and chuck it in your backyard or the street.

I have a large open grass area in front of my townhome and toss the plug around almost daily. It's been somewhat of a stress reliever when I just need to shut off my brain from work.

Anyways, from casting the plug in the grass and trying different techniques I've been able to increase my distance and accuracy significantly. Plus I taught myself to cast accurately both left and right handed. As a bank basher this has been a huge help since you often have to cast around obstacles.

thanks for the tips. got the rod re-wound with 6lb vanish, can throw a 1/4oz kasty like I want. 1/8 not bat either. rap and bullet sinker just makes a damn mess 15' out, gotta figure out the technique, I'm sure it's me. tried a couple 1/4oz jigs, promptly snagged and lost both of them, gave up and will go back to youtube to figure out which end is up with tube/jig
