Im going to Vegas to pick up a new car over spring break and I figured I might as well hit up Pyramid...especially considering I have time off. I remember other people saying they were going to check it out this spring...anyone gonna be out there early March? Its a long shot but it'd be cool to fish with a forum member out there. I'm gonna to be staying at my aunts friends house that's like fifteen minutes from the lake so I'm pretty pumped on that. Last time I stayed at some crappy casino in Reno. I learned a lot last time with respect to things I would do or wouldn't do and i really wanna be able to get my swimbait rod out there this time. Last time I just had my fly rods and a spinning rod. Has anyone here checked a full sized rod in a rod case on a plane before? I think I've done it before but not with a rod as long as my swimbait rod. I guess I should call the airline. Worst case scenario I'll buy a rod that breaks down or something.

One piece is gonna be oversized and I'm not sure there are rod tubes that long. Think my travel tube extends if needed but I have a few two piece travel rods -- no way a one piece will fit. I have actually been looking for a two piece swimbait rod but can't seem to find anything unless I go custom. Let me know what you find!

How long is your swimbait rod?
My bazooka style rod case stretches out to accommodate an 8' rod, no problem at airports.

get a piece of PVC and caps, seal good with shipping tape, then ship out to your aunts friend 2 weeks early so they can let you know it arrived before you leave. UPS is way cheaper than an air line. also that country can get bad snow in march

Heard March is the time of year to be there, which makes sense considering the lake is in Nevada and the cutties should be in shallower/ closer to shore then. Stick a giant!

Pyramid is currently closed to all recreational activities due to the floods in January. The tribe that the lake is on closed it down in mid January due to heavy damage to the roads and area surrounding the lake, and they don't anticipate reopening the lake until April of this year. Information can be found at Pyramidlake.us. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Pretty cool that you are going to hit it again. My original plan was to fish it on my drive home from Seattle in early March but since I ended up flying up that isn't gonna happen now. I still might make a trip in the first part of April depending on what the weather patterns and water temps are looking like.

It sounds like March was insane last year, with the good numbers and lots of big fish. Hopefully the crowds will be manageable. In the spring people flock to the Nets area like crazy and although combat fishing sucks, it was the only place I could catch fish.

I found out that pyramid is closed until at least mid April...maybe longer. It turns out they had some gnarly flooding after I left and a bunch of roads got washed out. If they do open in April, it'll likely be just the north half of the lake. This is all according to the lady I just spoke with on the phone...definitely a bummer but I'll make it back eventually. Love that place...

Well this sucks. Looks like you may have to find a different spring break fishing destination. Only bright side I can think of is that it gives those fish a break from angling pressure during the spawn.

Cadence...ya I talked to the family I was gonna stay with last week and they said it was closed. I called the lake today and they said it won't be open til April...and if it is open then, it will only be part of the lake. Must have been pretty bad if all those roads got washed out. Definitely a bummer but I'll get back out there eventually. Love that place...

This is what I was going to suggest. I think airlines charge $75-100 on oversized checked items.

You could probably ship it USPS for $15.
