As a lot of you know, I've been trying to get into some bigger lakers. Fished from like 730-dusk. I wanted to get there at like 630 but the extra hour of sleep was nice. I was thinking that it would be getting better and better as we get closer to ice-on. A couple weeks ago I was killing it. Well, the last few times I've gone, if it wasn't for the browns, I'd be getting the stanky skunk. I fished up and down the entire reservoir. Found some good new spots for the spring. There wasn't any ice as of yesterday. I'll probably keep trying but it's been tough. I've timed it so that every time I go up, it's snowing. Even then, it's been very slow. I tried all kinds of lures but no luck. Threw the big stuff for a while, too. I blurred the lure out of respect for Fordo. It's not the exact lure he recommended but it's close. I actually had used both even before he mentioned them but I'm not trying to piss anyone off. You never know....

yep common courtesy..another nice brown especially for there...good work...need to change your handle to...Whompem!
Haha people think my handle is some obnoxious, toot your own horn type of thing but it's actually an ode to an uncle that has since passed. We used to catch little bullheads at his farm pond and he'd tease us about the "whompus cats." He also used to refer to big lightning bolts as "post-hole diggers." Midwest humor I guess...he was a good man.

The laker game dont come easy, whomp. I wanna say I put around 300 hours into my first laker over the 35" mark. It is why the guys in the know are so hush-hush about most everything laker, it didnt come easy to them either. Keep at it bud, I can say that my best days on shore always involved sunny days.

Whomp, your timing is not optimum as far as catching them from shore at the particular spot you are fishing. Right now the macs are hungry and up searching for food, but you need to find spots that have closer access to deeper water, like the other reservoir i mentioned to you. Put your time in at the spot you are at now during ice off, and you'll get way better results.

Man. You're putting in work for a lot of different species. I'm sure it'll pay off for you soon. I've caught a few decent lakers under 28. Got a few follows by bigger ones at those spots but didn't fool em into biting. As I'm sure you know the big ones don't take the same things as the smaller ones. Still working on figuring them out.

This year I did mostly trouts. I'm thinking next year ima go for the toothy bastards. Gotta research up this winter for ice off.

Get a Black/Silver j-13 (old school) or a new fancy swimbait and take off all the trebles, add a 5/0 (I go barbless) trokar j hook or some thing similar to the rear only. When retrieving reel as fast as you can, you want the fish to chase it and eat it from behind while not getting a good look at it. Sometimes this time of year they aren't aggressive enough for this technic so try having a second rig out with a tiny jig and bait under a bobber. Sometimes the large fish are caught on the tiniest lures on days they won't bite a big bait and you'll get small fish also.

Even laker is better than blew cheese on fish...hell u might as well cook and eat a leather tennis shoe if youre just gonna waste a delicate fish like perch or walleye by putting it in the cheese version of cod liver oil and lima beans...hell blew cheese already smells like dirty sweat socks...might as well eat it with an old shoe where it was derived from...
