I don't think I have ever posted a thread on lures but this board is so dead I thought I'd put this out there for kicks:
I read a piece in an In-fisherman years ago that was centered around the concept of barriers and how predatory fish use those barriers to catch their preys. The shoreline and the surface of the water are two key barriers for me because I do most of my fishing from shore. In the last three years, I have been increasingly interested in lures and techniques focused on the surface. On a day with little or no wind, a surface or near surface lure will often produce 2 to 3 times more bites for me. Here is a list of some of the surface or near surface lures I have in my tackle box: floating Bomber Long A, Basspro Floating Minnow, Heddon Zara Spook, Rapala Max Rap, Rapala Skitter Walk, Rapala Subwalker, Lucky Craft Sammy, Spro BBZ Junior (floating), Spro Shad (floating), Smithwick Floating Rogue. The Long A, Basspro and Max rap have been good producers for me for walleyes (and other fish as well). The other lures have not yet produced for me but I have not thrown them enough either.
I just ordered some new (to me) lures yesterday (in various colors): Lucky Craft Real California (the 128 model with the lip) and Jackall Mickey. These 2 lures have something in common: they are swimbaits with a lip like a jerkbait. I mostly fish lures in the 4-6” range. I wanted something with the action of a swimbait but I also wanted the added water displacement from the lip. I do a lot of fishing at night and the added water displacement should make it easier to find the lure. I suppose I could also throw 8” lures and get the displacement through the larger size but some of the fish I catch may shy away from the larger bait.
Lures I have considered: Jackall Jockie 120F, Jackall Squad Minnow 128F, Yo Zuri Floating Crystal Minnow, H2O Express Floating Jerkbait. All of those lures are floating jerkbaits. My question is, how fast do they float back up? Some floating lures float back up too quickly for my taste (Bomber Loang A and Smithwick Floating Rogue). The Basspro Floating minnow has the perfect rate of float for me. If you have experience with the lures on this list, how would you compare these lures to the Basspro Floating Minnow?
I would be interested in the lures you use to target fish on or near the surface (0-2FT range). What do you use and what are your insights? What you got? Please no suggestion for lures over $50.
You don't need to give me detail as to how the lure is producing for you. You are also welcome to suggest lures that don't work for you. :biggrin1: Just the name of the lure would be fine. A brief description of its action would be great.
