Hey all,

Wondering what your opinion is about the Sunday contest ending at 11:00 as per the Facebook page.

Below is an email just sent to the Granby Chamber. They have been urged to read and participate so lets try and keep it somewhat clean.

Thanks for your feedback.

Good Morning,

Just read through the Facebook link rules and noticed that Sundays contest ends at 11:00. I feel this decision may be a mistake and it’s concerning that this may be the direction of the contest. All persons I know who plan on entering feel as if they do not want the contest to end that early also. The following statements outline actuality and our perspective of an 11:00 finish. Fishing can not begin until around 6:45 that morning which leaves 4 1/2 hours of actual contest. Generally speaking the bite does not often happen until the sun hits the ice at around 8:00. In order to make it to weigh station contestants regularly have to stop fishing 45 minutes in advance to get packed up, off the ice, and back to the station. As I outline, ending Sundays contest at 11:00 could perhaps reduce actual fishing time to somewhere around three hours. All of the people I’ve spoken with feel like what’s the point of paying an entry fee for only a few hours of fishing. This decision severely handicaps the spirit of competition for day three and many times, the prime time bite does not start until that time anyways.

We hope you strongly reconsider or even compromise with a 1:00 finish. I’m going to begin a conversation on Fish Explorer and ColoradoFisherman.com to see if others feel the same way and hopefully provide a larger sample for your team.

Thanks again for reading and appreciate all considerations.

I am disappointed to hear this news of ending the contest at 11:00 on sunday! I have been fishing this tournament every year for many years. Me and my group do not own snowmobiles so we are on foot. We like to fish the north east side of the lake so it's a bit of a walk to get to our spots and takes a lot of time to get there and back to the weigh station. I've placed a few times in the past years and this contest is always one of the highlights of the fishing year for us.
I'm against ending it early, don't see ANY reason to do so. If the contest ends early, the entry fee should be reduced for sure!

I feel, maybe, that the only way an 11:00 finish on day three would be acceptable would be to turn it back into a single three day contest.

You're right. I did not even think about the grand slam category. Nearly impossible with an 11:00 finish. I wonder what's going to happen with the unused prize money?

i was thinking of doing this this year.. but screw that end time. might go to tampa to headbang my face off at a metal fest that weekend, or go to the gorge with the girlfriend and try to get my burbot on.

I said same thing when I seen the 11 finish... I drive 3 hours for the tournament and fish all 3 days and ya it was rough ending at 430 on Sunday then staying for awards, driving 3 hours home unloading and going to work the next morning. I like the idea of a shorter day Sunday personally but 11 is way to early, I'm almost thinking of only entering fri and Saturday and just fun fishing Sunday. If you did catch a fish and place you gotta pack up be in town for the awards and then ur day is pretty much shot to go back out and fish again maybe a 130 or 2 end time. This way gives guys plenty of time to fish and then time to hit the road after awards. Also what about people that may only enter Sunday? Is it a discounted day as my brother may only be able to fish Sunday but paying 35 for 4.5 hours of fishing he's second guessing even entering as well. Whatever the contest decides I'll still be a patron. I'm lucky enough to have sleds and a few guys fishing with me so of we catch fish one guy can zip in to weigh while others keep fishing and I don't have to pack gear everytime. But of someone fishes alone and walks half way across the lake catches a fish they think is worthy, you pack everything up, walk to the truck drive over weigh then walk back to the ice or quit for the day... Or do you entrust fellow anglers you may not know that are nearby to watch your gear? I trust everyone til they give me a reason not to but I've got a lot of money in gear to leave for ransoms people to watch. Just my 2 cents it's a great tourney I always just fish for lakers never had much luck with anything else in Granby and don't know enough to honor the grand slam but I can see where others have said getting a grand slam on Sunday could be impossible I've only ever caught 1koke and lakers outa Granby so I'm sure you gotta jump lakes? Or cover the entire lake for different species? Not sure but maybe consider a later end time for Sunday. I have myself, 2 brothers and my dad who all agree with the early end time being a little to early. 4 votes for after 1 pm

Great response. Those are my sentiments exactly. The chamber and fishing committee seem like this year can not and will not change because fliers have been printed and sent out via mail. I'm confident they will make appropriate changes next year.

You are right but your voices are being heard, I guess there were requests to shorten Sunday due to anglers not wanting to get stuck in the i-70 traffic.

It does make sense not wanting to get caught in traffic but cut down the tournament that much? It's like fishing a tight line tourney I don't think I've ever even weighed a fish before 12 at that tourney. IMO cut it back 2 hours from normal time but make the awards ceremony optional for cash winners. They have all their info to mail a check, but as said before I'll be a patron regardless.
