So Union on Sunday in the afternoon was OK, caught 1 while drownin' mussels and was going to release, but a fellow skunked angler wanted it so I gave it up (bud of mine). A lot of people out there. In fact.... CRAZYY!!!! People!! Humans!!!! All over the place!!!!! I was terrified. But folks were enjoying fun with their fam & children so kudos to them. I was in good company of a few buds that I've been meaning to hang out with at any given lake shore for a while now so it was gravy. Spending $6 bucks for a sunny lake shore with chips, hot dogs and friends made more sense than a $60 tab at Dave & Busters.. Mainly went out just to, we call it, "kick it"...

However, from here on I'll avoid weekends at Union like a plague. Overall, the pressure was heavy, but I only saw average amounts of fish caught. Mostly wipers of 16".

For some moments, the entire west shoreline looked like this. Yikes!!

Today in the morn, a bud and I went out. Action was slow to fair for most from what I could see.... Except for us  >:D. Could have easily caught a "limit" counting the two of us but no point in that. Trying to get used to the circle hooks made for losing a lot of fish the first half of the morning. We bagged 7 and decided that was plenty. Mussels again. This time we used no sinkers and casted extremely close (as in 10 to 15 yds close). Just plain hook, line and mussel. Watching your line lose slack within a second and then feeling the rod almost jerk out of your hands is much more fun. Hint: most folks this morning were wading and casting way out. We just tossed this stuff out close without the sinkers. Anywhere along S & W shoreline is good using this method, just gotta be away from where people wade so them wipeys aint scared to come in close. I could tell by how I would see em' scatter each time I stood up (oh, the beauty of polarized sunglasses). Keep in mind though that the pattern with wipers change by the day sometimes. I visited Union and seen the pattern change 3 times and I've gone out 4 times. Whatever it is, I'm still trialin' and errorin'.. My key is to do as many trials as possible and eventually you'll catch action  :p somewhere within the many errors. Biggest of the day was 18" and a blimp. The two below were just the 16" usual.

Yes indeed, my friend... I fillteted three yesternight and battered em up to make wiper nuggets after we all left the lake. Cajun blend nuggets with 3.2 beers along w/chips & dip made for a lot of belching and usage of toothpicks.

Rottal:
You're more than welcomed to sink down to the level of spin fishin with us if clousers don't work. I'll probably be out there in the morning to practice on my photography skills  :p... With some mussels. I keep messin up on the shot where the hooked fish is still in the water & swimming.

I have never kept a Wiper to eat, how are they? Better than L.M. or S.M.?

Wiper is way better than largemouth OR smallmouth...

You have to cut out the "blood line" in wiper. Once you do that, they are terrific.

Keep in mind that is THIS time of year. In late July and August, when the lakes start to turn, the yumminess goes away unless you like algea. IMO, once a lake turns, the fish aren't worth keeping until the cold weather comes through. I really LOVE the fall fishing after the algea bloom (I actually prefer Fall over Spring for meat fishing).

Any return trips to Union recently? Always had pretty good luck there from the pier and left of it for wipers and crappie but haven't had time to get up there this year...

Not lately. Was gon' go on Weds morning, but the "gut feeling" just wasn't strong enough. The buds who did go returned with a report that was anything but stellar. Wait til it warms up a few days again.

Anybody been to Union lately? Lookin' to head up there Wednesday after work--will it be worth the drive? Gas is too dang expensive but I'll go if there's fish. Anyone had luck in the evenings? Union Res. closes at 8:00 p.m., correct?

I was there twice about 2 weeks ago. Caught a carp of those 2 days there. Everyone else around me was catching 15+ in. wipers. They were wading out to get the bait out further. Don't think I'm going back until the catfish bite starts.
