Fished Union today from about 7:15 until 10:30am. I was the guy out in the orange float tube if any of you were out there. Absolutely perfect weather conditions -- sunshine, warm, and not an ounce of wind.
This was my 1st time ever in the float tube, so this outing was a mix of fishing and getting acquainted with my craft... Fished 2 rods. One was just a small hook and a Gulp nightcrawler on 6lb. fluorocaron line -- no weight. I tied on a chartruese/white bucktail jig on the other. Threw the worm rod out and just basically forgot about it. 4 casts with the jig and I hooked a small (about 14") wiper. Sweet start, but wouldn't see another one of those the rest of the time.
Basically I just floated very slowly up and down the south shore moving progressively further out from shore. After about 30 minutes, something nailed the gulp worm -- a 13" rainbow. Threw iit back, put the line back out, got another 3 minutes later. Got a bit antsy and decided to troll, so I tied on a small spoon and Hot-shot crankbait in a silver/rainbow trout pattern. No love for about an hour when something absolutely smashed the crankbait -- fought it for about 30 seconds and then it just came off. I think it was a bigger trout based on the way it was fighting. I need to change the treble that comes on that crankbait -- it's made for steelhead and perhaps a bit large.
Got a bit tired (from all of the kicking), so I put the Gulp worm back on and landed two more rainbows (one was 18") and lost 2 more.
All in all not a bad day. I think I'll do better once I get the fishfinder hooked up the tube -- just working on the wiring and mounting right now.
