The 5 works fine and never lies to me but it really needs a larger screen. Gotta have GPS, and the CHIRP seems to be a nice feature. Id love a 9 but jeez they are around $1500, while the 7 is about $700.

Ill move the 5 to the bow to be paired up with the new Terrova 80/60.

Is the CHIRP worth the extra dough?

I think that's a great choice. I'm also thinking of putting an Elite 7 on my as well. The CHIRP feature seems to be a step up for sure. Lots of great reviews on this unit.

What is the chirp feature?
From Garmin:

The word itself is an acronym for Compressed High-Intensity Radiated Pulse.

Instead of sending just 1 single frequency, CHIRP sends a continuous sweep of frequencies ranging from low to high. CHIRP sonar technology then interprets frequencies individually upon their return. Since this continuous sweep of frequencies provides CHIRP with a much wider range of information, CHIRP sonar is able to create a much clearer, higher resolution image.

The 9 is 1299 or 1399 at both cabelas and bass pro depending on if you want the 83/200 or 50/200 transducer...versus 699/799...so $600 difference...Slayer your eyes arent getting any younger...and it will prolly be your fish finder for the next decade or $60 a year over a decade or $5 a month...if you buy 17 less cases of Keystone Light a year that $60 is a wash!...buy the 9...you wont regret it...

Man... That NEW "chirp" technology looks great !!
Especially getting rid of "clutter" like it does...
I'd go with the biggest screen...
As far as side imaging / down scan / etc, etc, etc...
Screw it.
I have a hard enough time distinguishing whats UNDER My boat... :-[
Let alone whats on the SIDE of it... :)
