George if I were you I would leave that big rig home. you can go to sportsmans warehouse to get your license and at the same time you can buy an inexpensive outfit that will be much better for trout fishing. the guys there can fit you out. you also have to be careful about where you fish the river in the Salida area as a lot of it has special regulations there are several lakes that you don't have to worry about fishing where you shouldn't. if you take highway 24 from CS as soon as you cross the ark. river I would turn right at the stoplight and find a place to stay in B.V. where there are several lakes north of there that fish real well in sept.

you may want to rethink going anywhere from CS, it is a destination for tourist. you can base from there and you will have a better location for lodging and dining. things to see less than 20 miles are, Manitou Springs, joins CS there you can tour Cave of the winds, Indian cliff dwellings, many shops, drive up pikes peak, garden of gods, air force academy, and other things. 50 miles or less Cripple Creek (a gold mine town from the 1850s) you can also gamble at the casinos if that interest's you. you can also drive south to Pueblo, also an old town, to the west is lake Pueblo and a bit farther is the Royal Gorge well worth seeing. from there you can return to CS or go on west to Salida, another old town then go north to Johnsons corner where you can return to CS via highway 24. or you can go north to Leadville, where the air is rare, it is 2 miles high, but also one of the oldest gold and silver mining towns. as sea level dwellers you need to take it easy up high. that drive is over 150 miles and you have that far to get back to CS. now about fishing, if you bring your rod and reel I would suggest you hire a guide for a trip for walleye on lake pueblo, as a matter of fact a friend of mine is a very successful guide on that lake.
