First, thanks for everyone who I've had the chance to chat with on these forums, you're all super friendly and helpful!

Quick question: Where is a good source for live minnows in the Loveland area?

thanks!

Not sure about Loveland proper...I think Berthoud is like 6 miles away (south) and there is a full line bait store there:

Bennett's Inc.
121 Bunyan Ave
Berthoud, CO
(970) 532-2213

Also Jax in Fort Collins has them and they built a new Jax in Loveland on the east side of town next to Walmart...so if Fort Collins has them...the Loveland store might...so you might call them.

Jax in Loveland DOES HAVE minnows. It is on the south side of Hwy 34 east of 287 about a mile.

I bought several dozen the other day there. As far as I can find it is the only place in Loveland to buy minnows.

You will have to go to the gun counter to get them. It would pay to call ahead because I got the impression that bait was iffy there. For instance the guy who helped me realized they were out of crawlers and leeches.

They had fatheads and shiners.

Thanks guys! Yep, I am in the Loveland JAX frequently but in all my trips through the fishing section I have never seen minnow tanks so maybe they keep them in the back - I
ll ask.

thanks!

Yes, there are no tanks where you can see them, they are in back and you need to ask at the gun counter if there are no employees floating around in fishing.

If you want to see what you are getting you can ask to go back with them, this seems to differ based on the employee.

One funny thing, I bought 3 dozen fat heads and I'm pretty sure he pulled them out one at a time until there were exactly 36. I may have even been a few shy.

Contrast that to Betty's today when I bought four dozen and after an afternoon of fishing I probably still have 50 minnows in the bucket.

If the Loveland Jax is out, Bennet's in Berthoud is the next closest, but if you WERE heading north you could get minnows at either JAX in Fort Collins, or just a few blocks up get a whole mess at Betty's. Betty's seems to have better info on the bite, Jax is hit-or-miss depending on who is at the counter.

yes go to Bennets if you want to feel like you are putting them out of talking on the phone or to each other. I have been in there about 6 times and had always bought about 50 bucks worth of stuff an the last time I was there I had about 100.00 worth of stuff on the counter between My buddy and I and when I asked if they knew if anything was biting the young snot nose kid looked at me like I was an idiot and said that fish are always biting somewhere and at 200 nothing bites. Well I looked at my buddy and he looked at me and we just waled out and will never be back.

I go to Bills on Washington even if I am going north if I need minnows now there is a real class of a guy.

Like I said go to Bennetts.......

All I can say is Bennetts are the ones whom do the Kids fishing days all over Northern Colorado. They spend alot of time on the ponds with kids from all over. From Handicap to Cub Scouts the folks at Bennetts take care of them all...

Dont know why you ended up with a bad experience but I will stand by them....

Sounds like Bennetts is the place. I sure miss Browns Corner............used to be on 34 across from the road to Boyd. That is the only time I've ever been able to buy live shad.............those guys had it all. :-\

Unfortunately I haven't been back to Bennet's in a lot of years.

I used to go there all the time when I lived in Longmont and came up to Loveland or FC to fish, but since I live North now I don't make it down that way. I've unfortunately had the same negative experience there as I have at Jax - they employ a variety of folks from time to time and not all of these have the same sense of customer service.

I try to patronize Betty's in Fort Collins for that reason, and if I lived south I would patronize Bennet's the same way - they are a quality outfit and in spite of the occasional less-than-helpful person I would recommend them.

Some days you just need to buy minnows, and that was what this thread was about. I don't know of any other Loveland-based oufits that sell minnows.
