I plan on going up there this week, If the weather permits. If not, then the following week. Anyone have any luck in winter there? What should I use? Is it a streamer game or nymphing? Please, any advice would help. I plan on stopping into Duranglers before stepping onto the water, but want some advice on what flies to tie up before my trip, and also what type of rig. Im guessing a simple 9' 5wt is probably best for all around. Do I need a sink tip for streamers if I should fish them? All the info I can get, thanks!

You will not need a sink tip. The water is very low and cold with slush ice on cold mornings. I haven't fished it lately. I'm guessing it is a nymph game now. Call Duranglers about patterns to tie. They won't steer you wrong. A 5 wt. is perfect.

McFly,

I saw in a documentary from the 1950s about the Silverton Durango steam train where anglers ride the train to a certain stop, somewhere between Durango and Silverton, depart the train, fish all day then catch another train back to Durango. I've not done this but if I'm choosing stream anatomy, I prefer above Durango in the canyon rather than in town. In the canyon the river is rough and tumble pocket water.

McFlyangler,

It's spelled Las Animas (the souls in Spanish).
Yes sorry, spelling mistake.

My wife is mexican so she speaks spanish quite well, and when we first moved here she was all terrified... It was funny. She saw "animas" (river of the lost souls) and then Purgatory ski resort and was like "where the hell did we just move too"? HAHA Obviously its not like she thought and she loves it here, just kinda funny as we first drove into Durango to visit from Farmington.
