I've fished the Fraser upstream of Winter Park. Driving from WP, at the first 180 degree turn in the road, the road leaves the creek. There are small but fun Colorado River Cutts as you go upstream. Another option is Jim Creek, across the highway and just slightly south from WP. Small cutts in there too -- fun on a dry fly. There's a trail up along the creek.

There's a good fly-shop on the main street in Fraser called Mo Henry's. They are really good at giving you information on where to go and conditions. They can help you with the Fraser. I was up there earlier this summer and they were recommending that people stay off the river because the city of Denver was diverting so much water from it. I'm sure that has changed, but I'm not positive. The other thing that Mo Henry's can help you with is access to the Fraser. There's some access north of the town of Fraser that you can get down to and walk near the RR tracks almost all the way to Granby. It's a fun river to fish. Hope that helps.

Roger that.  Both the Upper Fraser and Jim Creek are native cutt restoration areas, so pinch your barbs down and let the colorfull little guys go.  I suggest wearing hiking footwear instead of waders.  
   

 

Yeah, i'm going to be on foot from the Winter Park ski area, so going down to Fraiser is not going to be an option. I defininitely won't be keeping anything from up there and will likely just be wearin tevas or shoes. Looks like it could be about a mile walk over to the mouth of Jim Creek from the base area. Might be worth it. It's either going to be that or go on a long hike to get the legs ready for ski season. Thanks for the input though, it seems very tempting. If I had a shorter rod, or like a 5 piece rod, I would be apt to try it, since it would be a little more on the DL than what I have.

 

You might consider fishing the Frasier river just east of Tabernash as the river enters the canyon. Lots of open/public water, and it is cool when the trains go by. Nice fishing great scenery.

Feel free to "moon" the Amtrak.
